  • Frequently Asked Questions

    • Why has the decision been made to build a new church? Couldn't we just renovate what we have?
      • Originally, this was considered, however the cost to renovate and refurbish the existing church would be $10 million. Renovating would not have the same benefits as building new - such as increased size, seating, meeting spaces, parking, and modern systems. Renovation would only provide a temporary solution.

    • Much of the success of our parish has to do with present leadership. Can we expect consistency going forward?
      • Our parish has earned a reputation for hospitality and especially for enriching the journey of faith for young people. It is our firm belief that his spirit will continue for generations to come. Simply put, you are investing in a future that will be consistent with our parish's mission.

    • When will the work begin?
      • The work has already begun. We have acquired abutting property to better accommodate our campus and have cleared land for soil testing, with a plan to clear the rest of the land this coming spring. According to Archdiocesan guidelines, we must secure pledges for at least two-thirds of the projected construction cost and have 50% of the funds in the bank before construction can begin. Therefore, the success of Rebuild My Church will determine the timeline for construction.

    • What will happen to the St. Helen's and St. Thecla's properties?
      • These properties are in the process of being sold, and the proceeds will support the new construction.

    • Who will be asked to support the Rebuild My Church Campaign?
      • The new church will be a spiritual home for all of us, and it is our hope that every parish family will contribute to its construction to the greatest degree that they are able. With this hope in mind, we will be inviting all parish families to participate in the campaign.

    • Dear Our Lady of the Angels Family,

The collaboration of our three communities into Our Lady of the Angels Parish has brought us so many blessings! It has been embodied in full and vibrant Masses, the celebration of the sacraments of initiation for thousands of young people, impactful ministries, and countless new and beautiful relationships. I am overjoyed about the way everything has evolved. We are a welcoming parish known for radical hospitality and joy in our towns and throughout the Archdiocese of Boston.

Eight hundred years ago, St. Francis of Assisi was praying before a cross in the ruined chapel of San Damiano when he heard Christ tell him: “Rebuild my Church.” St. Francis took the Lord’s words to heart and set about rebuilding the chapel which we now call the Portiuncula. Three hundred years later, construction began on a beautiful new basilica, St. Mary of the Angels, around the Portiuncula to accommodate the parishioners and pilgrims who were flooding Assisi. The Portiuncula chapel outside of the Cardinal Cushing Center on route 53 is a replica of the same chapel rebuilt by St. Francis all those years ago. Like the Catholic community in Assisi, our parish continues to grow. It is with this in mind that we set forth on a mission to rebuild our church with the goal of constructing a new church, Our Lady of the Angels, on the site of the present St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church.

To facilitate the construction of our new place of worship, we are embarking on a capital campaign, Rebuild My Church, with the goal of raising $10 million. Whether you are new to our community or have called Norwell, Pembroke, or Hanover home for your entire life, I am asking you to prayerfully consider how you are able to contribute your financial gifts to this crucial endeavor.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and continued generous support for our parish as we look to the future with hope and continue to rebuild the Church.

      Sincerely yours in Christ,
      Father Chris Hickey
